Mbps vs MB/s: Conversion Chart and Download Time Table
By Gllownite Technology • Published 1 November 2026
Mbps means megabits per second. MB/s means megabytes per second. There are 8 bits in a byte, so to get MB/s, divide Mbps by 8. A 100 Mbps connection downloads at up to 12.5 MB/s.
Internet plans and speed tests usually use Mbps. Browsers, game launchers and download apps usually show MB/s. That is why a download can look eight times slower than your plan when nothing is wrong.
Mbps to MB/s conversion chart
| Plan speed | Maximum download rate |
|---|---|
| 10 Mbps | 1.25 MB/s |
| 50 Mbps | 6.25 MB/s |
| 100 Mbps | 12.5 MB/s |
| 200 Mbps | 25 MB/s |
| 300 Mbps | 37.5 MB/s |
| 500 Mbps | 62.5 MB/s |
| 1000 Mbps (1 Gbps) | 125 MB/s |
How long does a download take?
| Speed | 1 GB file | 5 GB movie | 50 GB game |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 Mbps | 13 min 20 sec | 1 hr 7 min | 11 hr 7 min |
| 50 Mbps | 2 min 40 sec | 13 min 20 sec | 2 hr 13 min |
| 100 Mbps | 1 min 20 sec | 6 min 40 sec | 1 hr 7 min |
| 300 Mbps | 27 sec | 2 min 13 sec | 22 min |
| 1000 Mbps | 8 sec | 40 sec | 6 min 40 sec |
These are best-case times, using 1 GB = 1000 MB. Real downloads take longer because of Wi-Fi, other devices and the speed of the server you are downloading from.
The formula
- MB/s = Mbps ÷ 8
- Mbps = MB/s × 8
- Download time in seconds = file size in MB × 8 ÷ speed in Mbps
To see what your own connection can do, run a speed test and use your download result in the formula. If it is far below your plan, read why you may not be getting the speed you pay for.
Frequently asked questions
Is 100 Mbps the same as 100 MB/s?
No. 100 Mbps equals 12.5 MB/s. A connection that truly delivers 100 MB/s would be an 800 Mbps connection.
How long does 1 GB take to download at 100 Mbps?
About 1 minute 20 seconds at best. Real downloads are often a little slower.
